alle de Casablanca is a wine sub-region located on northwest of Santiago, along the highway to the coastal city of Valparaíso. This area has provided Chile with an excellent location to produce exciting, high-quality white wines.
This is the youngest major wine area in Chile and they started viticulture production in the 1980s. The Casablanca valley made the country famous for fruity Sauvignon Blanc. As the main highway from Santiago to Valparaíso cuts through the valley, Casablanca’s wine tourism industry has expanded along with its production. This region has a cool coastal climate, especially compared to the hotter regions of Aconcagua Valley and the Maipó Valley. Casablanca Valley also picks up more moisture than the inland valleys. The soil types vary extensively. Sandy loam, clay, and gravel are all present. Fertility is generally low, which allows for the production of high-quality wines. The main varietals from this region are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot noir One of the biggest producer from Casablanca valley is Loma larga estate.
Loma Larga Estate
The owner of Loma Larga Estate is Díaz Santelices family. The interest in wine in the Diaz family goes back to the nineteenth century. Don Manuel Joaquín Díaz Escudero Alvarez de Toledo, grandfather of the owners of Loma Larga, personally brought French strains from his successive tours of Paris and Bordeaux, which were planted with the help of French winemakers in his estate “Chacra Victoria”, now located in the heart of Santiago city. With the intention of keeping this wine tradition alive, which brought their ancestors to produce high quality wines, as noted in the wine exhibition in Paris in 1889, the family began planting vines in their estate in Casablanca in 1999.
Previously, they started studying the climate and soil that led them to discover the big potential of the terroir of Loma Larga, which became the emblem of cool climate wines producers in Chile.
Felipe Díaz began a series of climate studies at his family’s estate in Lo Ovalle, one of the Casablanca Valley’s coolest zones. By 1999, the results had convinced him that cabernet franc, merlot, syrah and malbec would grow on the hillsides with warm enough exposures and poor soils. He farms these vines at severely reduced yields to promote ripening, and produces compelling cool-climate reds, including an herbal and refreshing 2009 Cabernet Franc. Loma Larga’s malbec provides a fresh perspective on the variety. A winemaker of distinction, native of The Loire Valley, Cédric Nicolle has 15 years experience working with cold climate grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Cabernet Franc.
He travelled through the most prestigious wine regions from New Zealand to Oregon, gaining knowledge of looking for finesse, elegance and fresh fruits.
Loma Larga fits him like a glove, thanks to the good conditions and cool climate style which is for him the best tool to produce fine and elegant wines.
Viticulturist is Germán de la Maza The estate owns 364.9 acres and annual production is 15,419 cases that are 100% estate grown.
